Four Ways of Relating to Appearances
The sources describe four teachings that address "what appears" or "all these points of view":
• Indulge what appears.
• Avoid what appears. An example of this is becoming solitary and celibate to get rid of desire, and "renunciation" is another word for avoidance.
• Replace. This involves replacing a negative or afflictive state with a positive one, such as replacing anger and upset with compassionate activity or happy thoughts.
• Maintain flawless awareness. This means to rest as undistracted awareness in an entirely uncontrived way. When an unexpected appearance arises, one should rest imperturbably as awareness rather than attempting to avoid, indulge, or replace it with something else.
